HISTORY OF PRAYER BREAKFASTS IN BARRIE

The International Christian Leadership Movement is the result of the inspiration of Dr. Abraham Vereide who organized Prayer Breakfasts in the western United States.

After Pearl Harbour in 1941, it seemed to him that the members of Congress needed spiritual association and comradeship relative to the guidance, wisdom and power of God.

From this beginning, weekly Prayer Breakfasts are held by U.S. Senators and Members of Congress. The first Presidential Prayer Breakfast was sponsored by Dwight. D. Eisenhower on February 5, 1953.

The first National Prayer Breakfast in Canada was held March 1, 1965, and continues today. The Ontario Prayer Breakfast was held the first Wednesday in October 1977. Barrie's Prayer Breakfast dates back to 1976.

BARRIE PRAYER BREAKFAST 2025

Brendan Caldwell

Brendan Caldwell was born, raised, educated and works in Toronto - so he often feels he personifies all that the rest of Canada hates about that city. For example, by profession he is a stockbroker and portfolio manager and has been a member of the Toronto, New York and American stock exchanges, the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the Kansas City Board of Trade.
For his sins, Brendan is serving a third term as a Warden of the Church of The Messiah, a tiny Anglican Church of 20 families whose foodbank feeds 500 families each week.

The father of four children (one of whom has the middle name "Simcoe") and godfather to eight more, Brendan teaches an online Sunday school class at The Messiah. A veteran and supporter of Ontario Pioneer Camp (where he first met the legendary Trevor Owen), Brendan led the camp's Leader-in-Training canoe trips for many years until four broken ribs and a torn meniscus in 2023 and setting an LIT on fire in 2024 convinced him to retire.

Brendan is passionate about how we should "draw the circle wide" to include children that are yet to be born. To that end, he founded Tiny Hearts 3D Ultrasound to help mothers and their families "see" their babies before they are born.
Brendan Caldwell
Because Brendan is from "The Big Smoke", God intended that he should marry Sandra Goss, a woman whose family for nearly 200 years has lived in the same farming community, Fairvalley, northwest of Orillia.

For over 30 years, Brendan's father-in-law Bruce Goss has patiently watched his son-in-law turn land on the family farm that Bruce's ancestors cleared with horses and hand saws back into bush … or as Brendan calls it "an arboretum".

Brendan is also a sailor aboard his Nonsuch "Pendragon" -- and a student of the poetry of John Milton, author of "Paradise Lost".

2025 LILLIAN JONES AWARD WINNER
Dr. Wanda Towers is a Barrie-based psychologist and past president of the Ontario College of Psychologists
